Tipping is fairly a common practice in Bali, though it is not always expected or required by tour drivers or other tourism industry workers. However, if you received exceptional service from your driver and would like to show your appreciation, a small tip of a few dollars or the Rupiah equivalent would definitely be acceptable.
One thing that’s worth mentioning is that our culture tends to be shy, and we often “hope for a generous tip in our hearts, but wouldn’t make a fuss if it was less than what’s typical.”
The amount you choose to tip is entirely up to you and should be based on your personal budget and the level of service you received. Some people may choose to tip more generously if they feel the service was particularly exceptional, while others may choose to tip less or not at all. Either way, your driver will understand and be grateful for any amount given.
But if you really need suggestion on how much to tip driver in Bali, there are a few “standard amounts” you can follow:
It’s quite common to tip IDR 50,000 (about USD 3.5) per day since your driver is going to be with you all the time and they’re hugely influential in determining your happiness through the whole journey.
If you can find a day driver who goes over the top while being nice and helpful, the above amount should be the minimum standard. If you are hiring a luxury car, you might as well double it.
Rounding your payments to the nearest IDR 10,000 wouldn’t go amiss here. If the distance happens to be quite far, tipping your taxi drivers an extra IDR 20,000 would always be appreciated. Although the drivers don’t normally receive proper hospitality training, trusted taxi companies like Blue Bird do employ rating systems to enforce good service.
It’s also a good idea to keep in mind that the cost of living in Bali might be lower than in your home country, so a small tip that may seem insignificant to you could actually be quite meaningful to the person receiving it. As a matter of fact, just IDR 100,000 (US$7) can feed an entire family of 4 for a day.
